Brandon Blackstock’s Ex-Wife Shares Heartfelt Tribute Following His Passing
Brandon Blackstock, 48, passed away on August 7, 2025, in Montana after a courageous battle with cancer.
Blackstock’s family announced the news in a statement:
“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”
His ex-wife, and mother to his two older children, Melissa Ashworth, posted a moving tribute following his passing.
“On May 29, 1999 I married the man who would become the father of my children. Brandon was full of charm, witt, and just an absolute gentleman who happened to wear cowboy boots, wrangler jeans, and a cowboy hat,” Ashworth wrote.
Ashworth shared a bit of her husband’s strong faith, saying his children could be at peace knowing he was in heaven with Jesus.
“He was by far, hands down, the best Daddy and Pa. He loved hard and he fought hard. The best thing Brandon has left for his children is they know where he is. I’ve heard it said, “Nothing is lost when you know where it is” and Brandon is with Jesus his Savior.”

Melissa & Seth Remember Brandon
Brandon and Melissa were married in 2001 and later divorced in 2012. The two share their daughter, Savannah, and son, Seth.
Seth, 18, also shared a series of photos and a special message to his late father over the weekend.
“I lost my hero yesterday, words can’t describe how proud of you I am on raising me and your 3 other kids. You were a father, a son, a brother, and most importantly my best friend,” Seth wrote on Instagram. “You’ll have to watch me grow up from a Birds Eye view now buts that’s ok with me. There’s no one else on this earth that I would want to be my dad because no one can be half the man you were to me.”
The post continued, “I love you so much and can’t wait to throw a line in the water with you again. Love you dad. Be good or good at it -love your son Seth.”
Brandon’s Cause Of Death Revealed
On Monday (August 11th), four days after Brandon passed away, his official cause of death was revealed. The Silver Bow County Coroner, Dan Hollis, told PEOPLE his cause of death was melanoma, and the manner of death was natural.
“Brandon Blackstock passed away peacefully at his home in Butte, Montana on August 7th under hospice care surrounded by his family,” Hollis said.
Brandon was best known for marrying music superstar Kelly Clarkson following his divorce to Melissa.
In June 2014, they welcomed their first child together, a daughter named River Rose. In April 2016, their son Remington Alexander was born.
He was also the former stepson of Reba McEntire, who was married to his father, Narvel Blackstock.
