In the evening of Tuesday, May 6, India initiated military strikes against terror-affiliated targets in neighboring Pakistan.

These two nations are among the nine in the world that possess nuclear weapons.

According to Reuters, the May 6 strikes were conducted by the Indian military under the name Operation Sindoor. Nine terrorist-related sites in Pakistan and the contested territory of Pakistani Kashmir have reportedly been bombed by India.

A press release from the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., stated, “[The attacks] were measured, responsible and designed to be non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani civilian, economic or military targets have been hit. Only known terror camps were targeted.”

However, the Pakistani military has responded to the attacks.

Combat has been observed by civilians, with some videos being posted to X, formerly Twitter.

India Responds To The April 22 Terror Attack

On April 22, a terror attack was perpetrated by Pakistani terrorists in the Indian-administered territory of Jammu & Kashmir. In total, 26 civilians were killed in the attacks.

Prior to the May 6 military strike, India responded to this attack by raiding Jammu & Kashmir for suspected terror links within the region. These raids led to India detaining over 1,500 individuals in the week following the April 22 attack.

Allegations of Indian police and military personnel rigging suspected terrorists’ homes with explosives have come out in the days that followed, according to NPR.

Contemporary strife between India and Pakistan can be traced back many decades, with much of it originating over a dispute brought on by the 1947 partition of British India.

In this partition, facilitated by Great Britain, Hindu-majority India was separated from Muslim-majority Pakistan, with the regions of Kashmir and Jammu left to determine with whom they would ally themselves.

Wars have broken out in the past between the two nations, such as the first and second Kashmir Wars in 1947 and 1965, and the Indo-Pakistani War in 1971.

Notably, India first tested a nuclear weapon in 1974.

President Trump’s Comments On The May 6 Strikes

During a swearing in ceremony in the Oval Office in the evening of May 6, President Donald Trump took a question about the initial strikes on Pakistani terror targets.

“It’s a shame, we just heard about it as we were walking into the doors of the Oval,” Trump said of the attacks. “I guess people knew something was going to happen based on a little bit of the past. They’ve been fighting for a long time, you know. They’ve been fighting for many, many decades, and centuries, actually, if you think about it.”

He added, “I just hope it ends very quickly.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been briefed by Indian National Security Advisory Shri Ajit Doval on the actions taken by the Indian military.
