Who Is Mark Carney?

Mark Carney is the Liberal Party’s new Prime Minister-Designate. He will undergo an election to determine if he will officially hold the title of Prime Minister later this year. Carney took over from Justin Trudeau, who chose to step down after nearly 10 years in office.

Trudeau stepped down on March 9, 2025.

Carney has not previously held a political office. He served as the Governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and later ran the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020.

Relations between Canada and the United States have been tense as of late, as Donald Trump recently announced Tariffs on Canada. The President also mentioned making Canada the 51st State of America.

Carney mentioned both of these instances during his victory speech, spending much of his speech speaking about or to President Donald Trump.

“America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever, will be part of America in any way, shape or form. We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves.”

And he continued on to say,

“Americans should make no mistake,” he said. “In trade, as in hockey, Canada will win.”

This is in reference to the recent match-up between Canada and the United States during the 4 Nations Face-Off.

The controversial hockey game gained attention when it made history by featuring three consecutive fights between players from Canada and the USA. The American team was upset after Canadian hockey fans booed the US national anthem.

The U.S. won that game but lost to Canada shortly after in the finals, which is what the new Prime Minister-Designate referenced during his speech.

Donald Trump Holds Firm On Tariffs

Carney’s speech did not deter the President of the United States.

Instead, he reaffirmed his belief that tariffs will have a positive impact on the American people.

During a press gaggle on Air Force One, Donald Trump openly expressed his confidence in the effectiveness of tariffs by saying,

“I think the tariffs are going to be the greatest thing we’ve ever done as a country. They’re going to make our country rich again.”
