Famed Singer-Songwriter Todd Snider Has Passed Away At The Age Of 59
On Saturday, November 15, Todd Snider’s team confirmed his death in a statement shared on his social media. The statement read:
“Aimless, Inc. Headquarters is heartbroken to share that our Founder, our Folk Hero, our Poet of the World, our Vice President of the Abrupt Change Dept., the Storyteller, our beloved Todd Daniel Snider has departed this world.”
“He relayed so much tenderness and sensitivity through his songs, and showed many of us how to look at the world through a different lens. He got up every morning and started writing, always working towards finding his place among the songwriting giants that sat on his record shelves, those same giants who let him into their lives and took him under their wings, who he studied relentlessly. Guy Clark, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Jerry Jeff Walker.”
The news of his passing came less than two weeks after Snider was physically assaulted outside his hotel in Utah.
The “violent assault” left Snider hospitalized with serious injuries, forcing him to cancel the rest of his tour.
Things became even more complicated afterward, when the Americana singer was reportedly arrested after he was discharged, according to TMZ.
He faced charges of disorderly conduct, trespassing, and making violent threats. Reports say Snider was asked to leave the hospital after arguing with staff, then returned and allegedly made verbal threats to someone. He was released from jail the next day.
Following that, Snider went back home to Tennessee, where he was admitted to the hospital once again.
Another statement later revealed that he had been struggling with an undiagnosed case of walking pneumonia, and his condition was getting worse. Not long after, news of his death was announced.
Cody Canada Gives An Emotional Performance In Todd Snider’s Honor
After Snider’s unexpected passing, friends and family have shared tributes to honor his legacy.
Rock artist Cody Canada was one of them. Over the weekend, he took a moment during his appearance at Texas’ Troubadour Festival to speak about his friend.
“If I could have a moment of your time.. they’re going to tell me to get off the stage, but I’ve been on stage for 32 years, and I’ve known that guy for 15 years, so if anyone’s mad, f***ing bill me,” Canada began.
“I lost my hero yesterday,” he added before pausing to collect himself.
He went on to encourage the audience to take some time to listen to Snider’s music and appreciate his work.
“I know you love him. I just want you to do one thing today, before you do anything, before you go to bed is listen to one song by Todd Snider. And then listen to two songs by Todd Snider, and realize that you f***ing missed out on the last 35 years of your life, if you didn’t know him.”
Canada continued, “Listen to that and listen to the truth that he speaks to people because nowadays people are afraid to talk about their feelings in music. All they want to talk about is beer and Jesus. All they want to do is sell a f*** record. But once upon a time, what people wanted to do was to touch a f***ing heart and touch a soul. And that’s what Todd Snider did up until yesterday at 4:13 PM.”
Canada then began singing Snider’s song “Can’t Complain.” A fan in attendance captured the touching moment and shared the video online.
Many fans flooded the video’s comment section with condolences and praise for Snider’s long-lasting legacy. Some messages shared include:
“Todd Snider was the best songwriter. His music changed my life.”
“Todd was incredible human and musician who did so much for East Nashville. He had more stories to sing”
“Amen. Youre words are so true. He was a one of kind human. The words a little less bright without Todd.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with Snider’s friends and family during this difficult time.
