You might consider yourself a big fan of country superstar Eric Church, but would you recognize him without his sunglasses on?

Well, for those who attended Church’s show over the weekend in Grand Rapids, Michigan, they definitely didn’t.

Turns out, the singer was walking right past them before the concert started, and no one had any idea it was him.

By now, wearing dark-tinted sunglasses on stage has become Church’s signature look. Over the years, he’s rarely been seen performing without them.

But they aren’t just a fashion choice. He originally started wearing them to protect his eyes, and the look accidentally became a trademark for him.

“I wear contacts and my eyes don’t do real well with lubrication, but we would play all these bars and clubs and the PAR can lights… I’m 6’3”, so they would bake my contacts and they’d fall off. So I ended up being blind on stage,” Church once explained in an interview with AXF TV.

“Someone suggested glasses, and it worked. What’s funny is it stuck. It was never thought out. We never thought, ‘This would be good.’ We actually at the time thought this is not good… but it ended up being a thing.”

The “Springsteen” singer has almost created a hidden identity for himself since he’s rarely seen with his glasses off. So, he wanted to put that to the test.

Eric Church Goes Undercover

In a video shared to his Instagram, Church explained that he and a few friends wanted to see if he could walk around unnoticed if he wasn’t sporting the iconic shades.

“Last night over too much Gypsy, we were talking about whether or not I could take my sunglasses off and go to my own show. I said I could. People around me said I couldn’t,” he explained.

Church decided to make things even more interesting by wearing a T-shirt with his own face on it and a hat that said “Chief” while taking a lap around the concourse.

It almost seemed like he wanted to get recognized. As he passed crowds of people, he was greeting them and even shouted, “Chief! Chief!

Still, nobody realized that the man walking by them was the very person they came to see that night.

By the end of his walk, Church said that only one person actually recognized him.

Many fans left comments, insisting that if it had been them, they would have recognized Church immediately.

Some who had actually attended the Michigan show admitted they were completely fooled. A few comments left on the video include:

“I’d recognize him anywhere, any day, any time.”

“That’s crazy, I would have totally recognized you!”

“Are you kidding me people??? lol”

“My husband & I saw you and walked past you!! It didn’t even register in my head!! We saw you recording on your phone”

“I saw you! And I thought, hey that’s a cool hat!”
