Team USA To Play Canada In World Baseball Classic
The United States national baseball team will face Canada Friday evening (March 13) in the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic in Houston, Texas.
After each finishing 3–1 in pool play, both teams advanced to the knockout stage, where a single victory will secure a place in the semifinals.
The United States enters the game as the favorite, with a lineup that has been among the most successful in the tournament. Canada, however, has emerged as one of the competition’s biggest surprises and will look to continue its strong run.
Right-hander Logan Webb is expected to start on the mound pitching for Team USA, while Canada is likely to start Michael Soroka.
Among the key players in the U.S. lineup include eight-time MLB All-Star Mookie Betts, Pete Alonso and Kyle Tucker, who have helped power an offense that has been among the highest-scoring groups in the competition.
“We’re going to go out and we’re going to play the game the way we play it,” Canada manager Ernie Whitt said Thursday (March 12). “We talk about playing clean. I mean, in international baseball, if you make mistakes, it’s going to cost you. And so we just try to play a clean game and play it the way that we play it with passion and pride, and play it until the end.”
The winner will advance to the semifinals of the tournament and play the winner of Friday evening’s Dominican Republic vs. South Korea game.
