Kelly Clarkson is determined to maintain a social media-free environment in her household.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the mother of two talks about her parenting style, emphasizing that while she’s flexible in many aspects, one rule she firmly stands by is not allowing her kids to have social media.

Why She Won’t Let Her Kids Have Social Media

Since Clarkson is often in the public eye, her children, 9-year-old daughter River Rose and 7-year-old son Remington Alexander, already have an uncontrollable exposure to public attention. To avoid giving the public more reasons to share opinions about her kids, Clarkson prefers to keep their lives private.

Regarding social media as a whole, Clarkson said “that can be really hard on kids in general but especially kids with parents in the public eye.”

“So I have informed them they’re not allowed to, under my roof, ever have [it].”

Clarkson’s top priority is her kids and their well-being, of course. Even with co-parenting responsibilities alongside her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock, she stands firm on her opinions, even if they are managing separate households.

My daughter was like, ‘Well, what if Dad lets me?’ I’m like, ‘Well, you’re there four days a month. Enjoy that.’ And right now he’s not letting them do it either,” Clarkson said. “I’ll listen when they’re older, but until they have a solid argument, it’s a no.”

When it comes to Clarkson’s parenting style, everything she does has intention— and she’s not afraid to openly share her beliefs on what’s best for her kids’ well-being. In the same PEOPLE cover story, she also revealed that her dating life isn’t a priority. It’s unlikely she would even consider a serious relationship until her kids are grown and no longer in her household.

For my kids, I definitely would never even think about it until they’re out of my house,” she stated.
