The Only Survivor Of The Devastating Crash Shares His Firsthand Account

A plane crash in Ahmedabad, India, tragically killed 241 people on board, including 5 in a local college hostel, and left more than 50 people seriously injured. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed on Thursday, June 12th, and authorities are still working through the rubble.

The Air India flight was traveling from India to London and crashed in a residential area of Ahmedabad, taking out a local medical college hostel.

However, one man, Vishwaskumar Ramesh, miraculously survived. The 38-year-old lone survivor was sitting in seat 11A.

Ramesh broke his silence and shared what happened to him during the tragic crash today, Friday, June 13th. He said,

“Everything happened in front of my eyes. I thought I would die. The side where I was seated fell into the ground floor of the building. There was some space. When the door broke, I saw that space and I just jumped out.”

The survivor was still confused as to how he made it out alive. He was able to walk out of the wreckage.

“The door must’ve broken on impact. There was a wall on the opposite side, but near me, it was open. I ran. I don’t know how. I don’t know how I came out of it alive. For a while, I thought I was about to die. But when I opened my eyes, I saw I was alive, and I opened my seat belt and got out of there. The air hostess … died before my eyes.”

India’s Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that he saw the sole survivor at the hospital.

Dr. Dhaval Gameti at Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital, the doctor treating Ramesh, shared that he sustained multiple injuries and was disoriented, but was overall okay.

The doctor shared that Ramesh “was disoriented with multiple injuries all over his body… he seems to be out of danger.”

What Happened During The Crash?

According to Ramesh’s testimony, the plane began descending immediately after takeoff when it suddenly split apart.

“After the takeoff, within a minute, it felt like the plane came to a standstill (in air) for 5 to 10 seconds. The green and white (cabin) lights turned on in the flight. I could feel engine thrust increasing to go up, but it crashed with speed into the (building).”

The sole survivor was visiting family in India but was returning to his home in the UK with his brother, who was sitting in a different section.

Tragically, according to Air India, his brother did not survive. Out of the 242 people on the flight, 241 had died.

According to Ramesh’s cousin in the UK, He was not worried about himself after the crash. Ramesh was only thinking about his brother. He said,

“Our plane’s crashed, I don’t know where my brother is. I don’t see any other passengers. I don’t know how I’m alive.”

Authorities have not released a cause for the crash at this time, but Air India has confirmed they are investigating the tragedy.
