George Strait Sponsors Home For Purple Heart Recipient

“We’re gonna do something really special right now,” George Strait told the audience at one of his shows in May.

What could be more special than honoring a Purple Heart recipient?

Well, giving that veteran the keys to a mortgage-free home would be very special … but it didn’t stop there, as the veteran had something special of his own planned.

Stepping onto the stage to accept the keys to the home, Retired US Army Sgt. Tyler Welty then got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend, Reanna.

Honoring A Veteran

Over the past decade, country legend George Strait, a veteran of the US Army, has worked with Military Warriors Support Foundation to gift homes to Gold Star families and veterans.

Standing on the stage with one hand held by his girlfriend, and the other grasping his cane, Welty was received with a triumphant welcome from the crowd.

Introduced by Retired General Leroy Sisco, Welty’s service and personal sacrifice to the nation was detailed.

“I want to tell you a story about this hero, and tell you what he did for our and your freedom,” Sisco said to applause.

Welty joined the US Army in 2009, and it was during his second deployment in 2012 that he was injured.

“[He] was deployed and was injured, severely, with an 82mm [shell] hitting his vehicle,” Sisco said. “Today, he suffers from [traumatic brain injury], PTSD, and anxiety and severe depression.”

In a statement on his military service, Welty said, “It was the best experience of my life. It came with many sacrifices, but it is all worth it.”

As the crowd chanted “U-S-A,” Welty waved his cowboy hat at the crowd.

Continuing, Sisco said, “We’re gonna say ‘thank you’ in a very special way, and we’re gonna give this incredible hero a beautiful home!”

Veteran Proposes At The George Strait Concert

After Sisco presented Welty and his girlfriend with a key to their home, Sisco then put the spotlight on Welty, inviting him to do what he had hoped to do on stage.

Dropping to one knee, he raised a box with an engagement ring in it and proposed. Appearing shocked and delighted, she said “yes.”

Posting about their engagement on Facebook, Reanna wrote:

“Yeah your man loves you but does he love you enough to propose on stage with George Strait in front of 65,000 people?”

As of May 26, the happy couple is married, according to Facebook.

Moving In

In a video shared by Mungo Homes, which built the home with financial support from Wells Fargo, the day that Welty and his Georgia-based family got to see their mortgage-free house and be presented with the keys can be seen.

With five children, ages ranging from 15 years old to four months old, Welty expressed that a need was being met by having this home provided for them.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp was on hand to present the keys of the home to Welty, saying, “We are so grateful for your whole family’s service, and certainly your service … We know that freedom is not free.”

Reacting to this gift, Welty described this as “one of the biggest moments” of his life, saying, “I was just completely taken by surprise … We can’t believe that this is our house. Now, I’m set for life.”
