This Week, Savannah Guthrie Sat Down For Her First Interview Since Her Mother Disappeared

Savannah Guthrie is set to return to her role as co-host on the TODAY show as the search for her missing mother, Nancy, continues.

It’s been nearly two months since 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie was last seen after being reported missing on February 1. The case remains ongoing, with authorities believing she may have been kidnapped late at night from her home in Tucson, Arizona.

So far, there are still no strong leads on who may be involved, but those close to her are continuing to spread the word in hopes of bringing her home safely.

Her daughter, Savannah, recently sat down with Hoda Kotb for her first interview since the investigation started. The conversation was split into three parts, with the first two airing on Thursday, March 26, and the final part airing Friday morning, March 27.

In the first part of the interview, Savannah shared details she hadn’t spoken about before, including the moment she learned her mother was missing.

In one especially emotional moment, she also opened up about the guilt of knowing her mother could have been targeted for ransom because of her own wealth and fame.

“I’m so sorry, Mommy. I’m so sorry… I’m sorry to my sister, my brother, my kids, my nephew, and Tommy, my brother-in-law … If it is me, I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry,” Savannah said, tears streaming down her face.

Confirmed: Savannah Guthrie Will Return To The TODAY Show

Over the past eight weeks, Savannah Guthrie has been on leave from her role on the TODAY show to focus on her mother’s case and be with her family. Now, she’s ready to return.

Just before the final part of her interview aired, Hoda Kotb, who’s been filling in for Savannah at TODAY’s co-anchor desk, announced that she’ll be back on Monday, April 6.

The decision to return wasn’t easy, but Savannah knew it was what she needed to do. In the third and final part of her interview, she explained why she’s choosing to come back while still going through the heartbreaking situation and knowing her mother’s kidnapper is still out there.

“It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness, and I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not,” Savannah said. “But I can’t not come back, because it’s my family. I think it’s part of my purpose right now.”

She continued, “I want to smile. And when I do, it will be real. I will have joy. And my joy will be my protest. My joy will be my answer. And being there is joyful. And when it’s not, I’ll say so. And I have been so grateful to have this family. I consider this my family, my greater family. When times are hard, you want to be with your family. And I want to be with my family.”

Savannah admits that she knows she will be different than before, but she’s determined to give her all and make things as normal as possible again.

“I don’t know if I can do it. I don’t know if I’ll belong anymore, but I would like to try. I would like to try… I’m not going to be the same. But maybe it’s like that old poem: ‘More beautiful in the broken places.’”
