Savannah Guthrie’s Mother, Nancy, Remains Missing

Savannah Guthrie has made her long-awaited return to the TODAY show.

On the Monday, April 6 episode of the morning show, Savannah was back on air for the first time since her mother, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared.

Nancy was first reported missing on February 1 after friends of the 84-year-old became concerned when she didn’t show up for her regular Sunday morning virtual church service. Family members went to her home in Tucson, Arizona, to check on her and discovered she was missing.

Authorities have determined that Nancy was likely kidnapped in the middle of the night. Footage was later shared of a possible suspect outside of Nancy’s home the night she vanished. The clip shows someone wearing a black ski mask as they try to cover up the Nest camera on her front door.

Now, more than two months have passed since she was last seen, and there are still no strong leads on who may be responsible.

After learning her mother was missing, Savannah took time off from her role as co-anchor on TODAY to be with her family and focus on the case.

At the end of last month, she sat down with her longtime friend and colleague Hoda Kotb for her first interview since the investigation began.

The conversation was split into three parts, where Savannah opened up about her mother’s case like never before. In the final part, which aired on March 27, she shared that she was ready to return to work.

Savannah explained why she chose to return, even with her mother’s kidnapper still out there.

“It’s hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness, and I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not,” Savannah said. “But I can’t not come back, because it’s my family. I think it’s part of my purpose right now.”

She continued, “I want to smile. And when I do, it will be real. I will have joy. And my joy will be my protest. My joy will be my answer. And being there is joyful. And when it’s not, I’ll say so. And I have been so grateful to have this family. I consider this my family, my greater family. When times are hard, you want to be with your family. And I want to be with my family.”

At the start of TODAY, Savannah sat behind the anchor desk beside her co-host Craig Melvin. She took a moment to address her return and shared how happy she was to be back.

“Good morning, welcome to TODAY on this Monday morning, we are so glad you started your week with us, and it’s good to be home,” Savannah said.

“Yes, it’s good to have you back at home,” Melvin responded.

“Well, here we go, ready or not. Let’s do the news,” Savannah continued.

For her first time back, Savannah wore a yellow, short-sleeved lace dress. The choice of color was likely intentional, as the color has become a symbol of hope.

Over the past several weeks, TODAY show hosts and staff have been wearing yellow ribbons and displaying yellow roses on set to show support in the search for Nancy Guthrie.

The Guthrie family is offering a $1 million reward for information that leads to Nancy’s discovery. They are allowing tips to be submitted anonymously. The FBI has also offered a $100,000 reward.

Anyone with vital information has been asked to contact the FBI tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324).
