Be Thankful You’re Not A Voice Coach

Every time you watch the battle rounds on The Voice, you’re likely grateful that you’re not one of the coaches. It’s sometimes agonizing for the coaches to choose which contestant they’d like to keep on their team, since the two competitors both display extraordinary skill.

Sometimes, a coach is left to make a choice based on what type of singer they’d rather have on their team. Someone with a unique tone and extensive range? Or someone who sings with precision and exhibits immense control over their voice?

Those exact questions are what Blake Shelton was left to contemplate following a battle between his two team members Dexter Roberts and Dalton Dover.

A Single That Stormed The Charts

Shelton paired the two country singers on one of the biggest hits in modern country music…Luke Combs‘ “Hurricane.”

Released as Combs’ debut single, “Hurricane” put him on the map when it became a number one hit on the Country Airplay chart. It also crossed over to the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at the 31st position.

As one of Combs’ best-selling singles to date, “Hurricane” has been certified triple platinum by the RIAA.

Roberts and Dover brought the perfect storm of talent to their battle performance of “Hurricane,” using the song to showcase their individual voices rather than sing it as a full duet. As Shelton noted in his comments after their performance, he was glad they chose to drop some harmonies they originally planned to include, as it gave them the chance to shine on their own more often.

All A Matter Of Preference

As the two traded parts throughout the song, it quickly became evident that Shelton was going to have a tough choice to make. Dover would sing and his tone would blow everyone away, then Roberts sang and his precision left people in awe.

In the end, the coaches felt just as conflicted over who should win the battle. They all loved the sound of Dover’s voice, but admitted that on a technical level, Roberts was just “there” a bit more.

Then it all came down to Shelton, who said the situation he had to face was a “sucky” one. But when it came down to it, he picked precision over tone, and chose Roberts as the winner of the battle.

Now it’s time for you to watch the performance below and offer up your own thoughts. Would you have made the same choice if you were in Shelton’s shoes?
