Teen Suspect Arrested For Allegedly Starting One Of New Jersey’s Largest Wildfires In 20 Years

The Jones Road Wildfire Rages On
Shawn Latourette of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection says it might be the “largest fire in New Jersey in 20 years.”
Authorities believe the Jones Road Wildfire may exceed the largest fire in the state, which occurred in 2007 and covered 26 square miles. Currently, this fire spans 20 square miles and is only 50% contained.
The fire started Tuesday morning and was 30% contained by midday Wednesday. The Interim Mayor declared a state of emergency to give the firefighters a better chance.
“Due to its accelerated growth, with an estimated burn of 8,500 acres, threatening more than 1,000 structures, requiring the evacuation of residents in the area, and the loss of power to over 25,000 residents, I am declaring a State of Emergency for Ocean County. I encourage all residents in the County to continue to monitor the proper channels, and to use caution and follow all safety protocols.”
In a recent update, the civilian areas have been cleared, and most of those forced to evacuate have been given the all clear to return home. However, the smoke warning is still in effect.

The Teen Suspect Is In Custody
19-year-old Joseph King has been arrested for aggravated arson and arson in connection with the Jones Road Wildfire.
According to The Weather Channel,
“Investigators accused King of starting a bonfire with wooden pallets – and then leaving the area without fully extinguishing the flames. Police say he was taken into custody Wednesday and is in the Ocean County jail awaiting a detention hearing.”
