Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani Hospitalized Over The Weekend
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was hospitalized with a broken vertebra after a car accident over the Labor Day weekend, a spokesperson announced Sunday (August 31).
The politician was reportedly traveling on a highway in New Hampshire when his car was “struck from behind at high speed.”
“He was transported to a nearby trauma center, where he was diagnosed with a fractured thoracic vertebrae, multiple lacerations and contusions, as well as injuries to his left arm and lower leg,” Michael Ragusa, head of his security, said. “His business partner and medical provider were promptly contacted and arrived at the hospital to oversee his care.”
Ragusa told NPR Giuliani is “fully alert and conscious, and his medical team is pleased with his progress.”
“The Mayor is eager to return to his work and looks forward to getting back to business in just a few days,” he continued.
Authorities announced three people, including Giuliani and the driver of his car, suffered “non-life-threatening injuries and were taken by ambulance to area hospitals for treatment.”
“As a result of the collision, both vehicles went into the median and were heavily damaged. Troopers and fire personnel, who were at the scene of the first incident, witnessed the collision and quickly crossed the interstate to render aid,” the police said.
President Trump Is Awarding Rudy Giuliani The Highest Honor
President Donald Trump announced Monday (September 1) that he plans to award Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and his previous personal attorney, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
The announcement follows reports that Giuliani was involved in a car accident over the weekend while in New Hampshire.
“As President of the United States of America, I am pleased to announce that Rudy Giuliani, the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot, will receive THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM, our Country’s highest civilian honor. Details as to time and place to follow,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Giuliani Once Named “The People’s Mayor”
During the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Giuliani was famously named “America’s Mayor,” highlighting his leadership during one of the nation’s darkest moments.
Oprah Winfrey coined the phrase during a memorial event at Yankee Stadium, and he was also later named Time magazine’s Person of the Year for 2001.
The President and Giuliani held a cordial relationship during his mayoral years, and Giuliani praised Trump’s contributions to the city. The former NYC mayor became one of Trump’s most vocal and high-profile supporters during his 2016 campaign, and later the President’s personal attorney in 2018.
