President Donald Trump Is Building A New Ballroom In The White House
President Donald Trump has announced plans for a new $200 million ballroom, marking the latest addition to the White House during his time in office.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt officially unveiled the proposal on Thursday (July 31), announcing a $200 million project to construct a 90,000 sq ft “State Ballroom” adjacent to the main White House building.
“We are proud to announce that the construction of the new White House ballroom will begin. For 150 years, presidents, administrations and White House staff have longed for a large event space on the White House complex that can hold substantially more guests than currently allowed,” Leavitt told reporters.
The new ballroom, which will accommodate roughly 650 guests, is intended to serve as a permanent venue for large-scale official events.
Currently, such functions are typically held in the East Room, which seats about 200. For larger gatherings, the White House often relies on temporary tents on the South Lawn, a solution the administration has described as inconvenient and visually unappealing.
“The White House is one of the most beautiful and historic buildings in the world, yet the White House is currently unable to host major functions honoring world leaders in other countries without having to install a large and unsightly tent approximately 100 yards away from the main building’s entrance,” she said.
Trump Revamps The White House During His Stay
In June, Trump installed two monumental 100-foot American flags, one each on the North and South Lawns of the White House.
Trump took to his Truth Social account to share the news, nothing that the grounds had lacked proper flagpoles up until now.
“It is my Great Honor to announce that I will be putting up two beautiful Flag Poles on both sides of the White House, North and South Lawns,” Trump wrote at the time. “It is a GIFT from me of something which was always missing from this magnificent place.”
The President said his personal funds are covering the installation expense, emphasizing the high-quality of the poles.
“They are tall, tapered, rust proof, rope inside the pole, and of the highest quality,” he continued. “Hopefully, they will proudly stand at both sides of the White House for many years to come!”
Trump Remodels The Historic Rose Garden
Around the same time, workers reportedly also broke ground to begin paving over parts of the historic Rose Garden.
Photos from the early stages of construction showed significant changes to the White House grounds, where a grassy area is being excavated and sections of a limestone border, originally installed by former First Lady Melania during Trump’s first term, are being relocated.
Trump explained that the former setup of the Rose Garden wasn’t always favorable for walking.
“You know, we use [the Rose Garden] for press conferences, and it doesn’t work because the people fall,” he said. The terrain can be wet, and the soft ground can be an issue for some, Trump added. “Women, with the high heels, it just didn’t work.”
