Although many seem to believe that flushing our goldfish down the toilet is the best method of disposal, experts are encouraging those who purchase these aquatic pets to seek out other options.

Not As Cool As It Seems

After the discovery of a massive, 14-inch goldfish in the Niagara River, the non-profit organization, Buffalo-Niagara Water Keeper are warning people to stop flushing their unwanted goldfish.

Given that goldfish are used to living in bodies of water, many seem to assume this to be a harmless action. Nevertheless, since goldfish are not native to these massive bodies of water, they can actually destroy the habitat of the fish that are native to the bodies of water they land in.

Better Options

Alternatively, authorities are now encouraging those who have a change of heart with regard to keeping and taking care of their goldfish, to simply return them to the pet store.
