Two months ago, 80-year-old Virginia Luce from East Texas retired from a 25-year career as a Registered Nurse. Even when she was working, she and her 83-year-old husband never missed an opening day.

They have lived near the Davy Crockett National Forest for many years, which is an ideal hunting spot and she has a pretty good strategy as well.

“My husband and I have hunted and fished together for our entire married life — 63 years,” she told Dallas News. “I usually kill a buck every year, but we don’t allow anyone to shoot the momma deer. The way I see it, if you leave the girls alone, the boys will come.”

But as they got older, they learned that sitting up high in a deer stand all day wasn’t a smart choice, so they began hunting from their house. They keep corn feeders on their property and can track the bucks with cameras they have set out.

Luce told Dallas News, “I do all my hunting from the house now. My kitchen is my deer stand. We take the screen off one of the windows every fall. I can see a pretty good ways from there.”

She always keeps her gun nearby in case she sees a buck and on November 8th – as she was fixing lunch – she saw what she thought was a buck, but needed her binoculars to confirm it. Lo and behold, it was. So she grabbed her rifle and fired one shot.

Her husband, who was sitting in his lounge chair, said that he had no clue she had even seen a buck until he heard the gun go off.

“She watches them all time when she’s in the kitchen,” he said. “Right after the shot she hollered, ‘Well, that was the big one, Daddy.’ That’s when I put my boots on, got on the tractor and went to load him up. He didn’t go far. She doesn’t miss very often.”

Once they got to the buck, they realized it was by far the biggest one Luce had ever shot.

Jacob Carter at McCarty Taxidermy scored the buck with “11 points, including a split brow tine, the buck has been taped at 1602/8 gross as a non-typical,” according to Dallas News.

He added, “It’s a really neat looking deer. And what a neat story. It’s not every day you hear about an 80-year-old woman shooting a big buck out of her kitchen window.”

Luce’s grandchildren shared the excitement by posting photos of her kill on Facebook.

My grandma can out hunt your grandma. 80 years old and got it done from her kitchen window,” Bruce Childers wrote on Facebook, while her granddaughter Tricia Ellingson said, “I can only hope to be half as awesome as my Granny is at her young age.”
