“To the community member who heroically intervened to stop further loss of life, your actions carry a heavy emotional burden, and I just want you to know my thoughts are with you as well,” said Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek in a press conference in the evening of Thursday, Oct. 15.

That day, at approximately 12:59 p.m. PST, a 911 call was received regarding an active shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon.

The shooting would go on to claim the lives of four people, three of whom were students, aged 5, 8, and 11. The fourth slain individual was a teacher.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the four deceased victims, but noted that a 7-year-old student and another teacher were taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

That more people were not killed or injured is likely thanks to a yet-to-be-identified hero who pursued the gunman and killed him.

There, a gunman armed with a long gun had opened fire at a person in a vehicle outside of the school. The shooter, simply identified as a 16-year-old male from Bend, proceeded to “force their way into the school by shooting at locked doors,” said City of Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz at a press conference.

Within one minute, at 1 p.m. PST, dozens of 911 calls came through notifying law enforcement of the shooter entering Silver Rail Elementary, with all of law enforcement mobilized at that point.

By 1:01 p.m. PST, officers had placed the school under lockdown, and arrived at the scene of the shooting at 1:02 p.m. PST.

“Moments later, an officer reported that a suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school and pursued him into the school and engaged him,” Chief Krantz stated.

As of the morning of Friday, Oct. 16, neither the shooter or the hero have been identified.

While the identity of the hero has not yet been disclosed, dispatch audio that was recorded amid the incident finds the 911 operator identifying him as possibly being a student’s father, saying, “It looks like the shooter has been neutralized, possibly shot by a father at the school.”
