Hardcore Rock Frontman Lou Koller Dies At 59
Lou Koller, the longtime frontman and co-founder of New York hardcore rock band Sick of It All, has died at 59. His bandmates shared the news in an Instagram post, describing the loss as “overwhelming.”
Who Was Sick Of It All?
Sick of It All became a New York hardcore band formed in 1986 in Queens by Koller and his brother, Pete Koller. Over the next four decades, the group became one of the most influential groups in the hardcore punk scene.
The band released a number of acclaimed albums, including Blood, Sweat and No Tears, Just Look Around, Scratch the Surface, and Yours Truly. Sick of It All helped define the sound of New York hardcore throughout the late 1980s and 1990s.
Koller revealed in June 2024 that he had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer that had spread to his stomach. The diagnosis forced Sick of It All to cancel its European tour while he underwent treatment. The band had been set to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year.
After undergoing intensive treatment, including chemotherapy, Koller announced in May 2025 that he was cancer-free. However, the cancer returned just months later.
Fans took to social media to pay tribute to Koller following news of his death:
“🖤Big love to his friends, family, and band mates. He had an incredible life, left an undeniable mark on hardcore, and will be deeply missed,” one user wrote.
“The band that introduced me to hardcore when I was 15. RIP Lou, you’ll be truly missed and you’re going to leave a huge void. 🥺🖤😢,” another said.
