Blake Shelton Honored With Special Title For Indianapolis 500
on May 28, 2022
Blake Shelton has one more gig to add to his already impressive resume. The “Honey Bee” singer was named grand marshal of Sunday’s 106th Indianapolis 500.
Grand marshal duties often include greeting drivers and dignitaries prior to the race, riding in the pace car and delivering the official “drivers to your cars” command.
“Blake is a country music powerhouse and good friend of motorsports fans everywhere,” IMS President J. Douglas Boles said. “For both spectators at the track and everyone watching on NBC, his winning energy will be a perfect fit for the intensity of ‘The Greatest Spectacle of Racing.’”

Grand marshals aren’t named for every annual race and Shelton is the only country singer to be given that honor. Other notable Indy 500 grand marshals have included Olympians Nastia Lukin and Nick Goepper and “Brady Bunch” star Florence Henderson.
Shelton’s Indy 500 duties come on the heels of his special role in last week’s NASCAR All-Star Race at Texas Motor Speedway. The country star kicked off the event with a pre-race concert before transitioning to emcee as he joined former Cup Series star Clint Bowyer to introduce the All-Stars. He then took on the duties of grand marshal and gave the command for the NASCAR drivers to start their engines.

Blake Shelton has been a longtime vocal fan of NASCAR, so his partnership with them should come as no surprise. In 2015, the Voice coach was featured in the NASCAR on NBC opening montage. The open featured the title track from Shelton’s Bringing Back the Sunshine album.
The montage featured Shelton along with drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr., Clint Bowyer, Danica Patrick, Jimmie Johnson and Austin Dillon. Shelton was featured in the NASCAR open through 2017. Check it out below, and tune in Sunday, May 29th, to see Blake Shelton at the Indianapolis 500.
