This George Jone’s classic received a whirlwind makeover when Chris Stapleton stepped onto the country music scene.
Stapleton rose to super fame overnight after his epic 2015 CMA performance, and multiple-award wins. But unless you’re a fan of classic country, you probably didn’t know that Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey” isn’t the original.
In fact, Jones wasn’t even the first to record the song! David Allan Coe recorded “Tennessee Whiskey” in 1981, however, it didn’t receive the attention it deserved until two years later. Jones covered the song in 1983, where it reached #2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Fast forward nearly 3 generations, and the song has landed at the top of the charts once again.
We can all agree that Stapleton’s version is absolutley one for the books, and we’ve all had it stuck in our heads for months. That being said, it was a risky move for Voice contestant Adam Wakefield to take during his blind audition.
Wakefield’s beard may not be as long as Stapleton’s, but he has the look and the talent to mirror the Grammy Award winning artist. We’re a fan!
His Nashville roots landed him on Blake Shelton’s team, but in case you missed the performance we’ve placed the video below. Good luck on Team Blake this season, Adam!
