Almost 30 Years After Its Release, ‘Steel Magnolias’ Cast Reveals Their True Thoughts Of One Another

The year was 1989 and Dolly Parton’s hair was bigger than ever!
The movie Steel Magnolias became a classic for Southern women everywhere and quite possibly one of the most quotable movies around!
The film follows a group of women in a small Southern town and how they eventually cope with the death of one of their own. It stars Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Parton, Olympia Dukakis and Daryl Hannah.
In April 2017, Field and MacLaine sat down separately with PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly to play a little word association game.
When they heard a fellow cast member’s name, they had to say the first thing that came to their minds.
Field said that “no one really knows the total gem of a soul Dolly Parton is,” while MacLaine wished she knew her better.
When it came to Olympia Dukakis, MacLaine had one word to describe her – “girlfriend”. The two actresses have worked together on many projects and are very close friends.
Jess Cagle, PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly’s Editorial Director, asked Field what she thought of America’s Sweetheart Julia Roberts, Field called her a “pig!”
She went on to explain that Julia would understand the joke, which makes us want to be part of their group even more!!
When asked about each other, MacLaine said Field was “fiercely adorable,” while Field called MacLaine “colorful!”
