The legendary country singer and duet partner to Merle Haggard took to social media on Wednesday (April 6th) to honor his friend who passed.

Willie Nelson paid tribute to one of his closest friends in a beautifully simple and fitting way. The two had been known as touring partners for many years and even cut a few records together.

Most recently, Haggard and Nelson teamed up for an album titled Django & Jimmie that debuted in July 2015 and hit the charts high, nailing the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Top Country Albums.

Nelson shared a photo of the two laughing together with a simple caption and a link to their video for “Pancho & Lefty”

The country legend was not alone in mourning the loss of a great artist and many artists in the community paid tribute to the legend lost. Tim McGraw gave a heartfelt performance of “Workin’ Man Blues” and Dolly Parton opened up in a similar statement to Nelson’s.

“We’ve lost one of the greatest writers and singers of all time. His heart was as tender as his love ballads. I loved him like a brother. Rest easy, Merle,” Parton says in her statement.
