When Merle Haggard passed away in April 2016, many of his most famous fans took time out of their live shows to dedicate a song to him.

Chris Stapleton was one of those people. During a show in Mesa, Arizona just a few days after Haggard passed away, Stapleton took a moment to remember the man who Stapleton calls the “greatest singer and songwriter that ever lived.

We are gonna try to play a song for The Hag tonight,” he said introducing his next song.

Stapleton and his wife, Morgane, who sings backup for him, began singing “Today I Started Loving You Again” and the crowd enjoyed every second of it, as did we.

Every time there was a musical break, the audience would cheer. Chris and Morgane’s vocals together are pure perfection, and they did not stray too far away from Haggard’s original version.

Haggard first released “Today I Started Loving You Again” in 1968 and although it has become an iconic song and a staple on classic country radio, it failed to chart at the time of its release. He and his then-wife, Bonnie Owens, wrote the song together after experiencing feelings for each other while they toured together.
