After years as one of Nashville’s most successful songwriters, Chris Stapleton is finally experiencing his much-deserved moment in the spotlight. His debut album, Traveller, was named Best Country Album at this year’s Grammy Awards, and he continues to rake in more awards as time goes on.

Country fans have flocked to Chris’ music primarily due to his unique, bluesy style that sounds unlike any other artist out there at the moment. But anyone who’s listened to his music or watched him perform certainly can’t do so without noticing the equally powerful female voice that is always there to back him up.

The woman who always stands by Chris on stage also stands by his side through life. His wife, Morgane, is the person behind those breathtaking harmonies that are sprinkled throughout Traveller and his live performances.

During a recent interview with Billboard, Morgane spoke about what it’s like to share the stage with her husband. She revealed that before she married Chris she had been pursuing a solo career of her own, but it never panned out. Despite all of that, Morgane knows she’s exactly where she’s meant to be in life at this time:

“I’m supposed to be doing what I’m doing right now. It was never supposed to be about me. It was always supposed to lead here. I support Chris, and I get to do what I love and he gets to do what he loves, and we get to do it together. That means more than anything.”

Although Morgane usually sings background vocals for Chris, she takes the lead on the couple’s collaboration for the recently released compilation album, Southern Family. The Stapletons chose to record the beloved tune “You Are My Sunshine,” a song they had performed for years that features Morgane in a solo moment of her own.

It’s one that Chris and I have done for several years now,” Morgane said, but they originally considered writing new material for Southern Family first. “At the end of the day, we didn’t feel like we had anything that beat [‘Sunshine,’] and wanted a home for it anyway.

Chris and Morgane’s version of “You Are Me Sunshine” is hands down one of the highlights of the album. You can listen to it in the clip below.

After watching and listening to Morgane sing with Chris for all this time, it’s interesting to finally hear what the experience is like for her!
