Truly one of the best-known country duos to emerge at the top of the charts since the 90s neotraditional country movement, Montgomery Gentry have solidified themselves as a hard-rocking pair that salutes true Americans and pays homage to their homeland.
During a rare, sneak-peak at the beginnings of one of their hits, three top Nashville songwriters speak about how well “Headlights” truly fits the duo’s values, history, and musical prowess.
“Headlights” was issued as the lead single to Montgomery Gentry’s eighth studio album, Folks Like Us, in 2014 and became an instant hit with Southern-rock fanatics worldwide, charting in the Top 40 on Billboard’s US Country Airplay.
“The first time I heard it, I knew it was for them,” producer Michael Knox reveals in the video. “I remember playing it in that first meeting and everyone kind of looked around and was like ‘Man! That’s MG!'”
The writers, Bob DiPiero, Wendell Mobley, and Tony Martin, are all well-known and respected country music craftsmen who agree that the song is a true perfect-fit for this powerhouse duo.
“It fits Montgomery Gentry because you’re talking about a true duo,” Tony Martin started. “Truly, both sing on the song.”
“You get Eddie starting out with this warm thing that’s going and then Troy comes in…and now all of a sudden you’ve found the party and it’s rocking,” he continued. “The song really fits them – where they’re from, who they are, and goes back to even the beginning when I first heard them.”
Eddie and Troy were ecstatic to have those three talented songwriters building something for them and they positively loved the track.
“To get those three together on a song for us, man, it’s a total pleasure,” Troy says with Eddie nodding in agreement. “This song totally rocks!”
And Troy is right! We absolutely love this track!
