Music is a powerful thing, something that Brooks & Dunn proved when they released a new single in October 2005. The song, called “Believe” ended up becoming something greater than Brooks & Dunn ever imagined.
Ronnie Dunn sang lead vocals on “Believe,” which he co-wrote with Craig Wiseman. The song tells the story of a man named Old Man Wrigley, who speaks to the narrator about his faith and belief he’ll one day go to heaven. Old Man Wrigley dies after the narrator leaves for college, prompting his emotional declaration that, “If there was ever anybody deserved a ticket to the other side. It’d be that sweet old man…“
“Believe” has been covered a handful of times, perhaps most notably by Jennifer Hudson. She performed the song during Brooks & Dunn’s Last Rodeo tribute and later recorded it for one of her own albums.
One of the lesser-known covers of “Believe” is one performed by a young man named Connor Rose. Now 20, Rose currently lives in Nashville where he’s been pursuing his career in country music. Over the years, he’s had the chance to open shows for well-known stars such as Lonestar and Gretchen Wilson.
Rose was only 15 years old in 2011 when he sang a chill-inducing cover of Brooks & Dunn’s “Believe.” He performed the song during a Father’s Day concert, and we’re sure there wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd as he sang.
Anyone who’s listened to “Believe” knows that it’s a challenging song to sing. For starters, there are drastic changes in volume and tone throughout the song. In order to pull it off successfully, you also have to convey the song’s emotions through your voice.
Rose managed to do just that, and had no trouble tackling the song’s many other challenges. At such a young age, he already had an incredible command of his voice.
