George Jones sang his heartbreaking country classic “He Stopped Loving Her Today” live back in 1989 in a heartbreaking performance.

The country legend has a look of sorrow on his face while singing the deeply despondent lyrics and sounds as if he is singing through sad memories of the past.

“He said, ‘I’ll love you till I die,’ she told him ‘You’ll forget in time'” he sings. “He stopped loving her today, they placed a wreath upon his door…Soon they’ll carry him away, he stopped loving her today.”

“He Stopped Loving Her Today” tells the tale of a man who was haunted by the memory of a past love until the day he died. From obsessing over past love letters sent to one another to holding onto hope that she’ll one day return, the song speaks the fear that many going through heartbreak have of loving an ex until the day you die.

The song was released in 1980 and hit No.1 on U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles and No.2 on Canadian RPM Country chart. The song’s wild success led his record label to renew his contract and heightened interest in him as an artist amongst the country music community.
