Two country legends came together to sing one of country music’s most beloved songs. Country icon Merle Haggard invited the stunning Tammy Wynette to join him onstage for a moving duet of “Today I Started Loving You Again.” It has gone down as one of those unforgettable classic performances.
“Today I started loving you again, I’m right back where I’ve really always been,” Merle sings to Tammy.” “I got over you just long enough to let my heartache mend, and then today I started loving you again.”
With Haggard rocking a casual look in a leather jacket and hat, he starts off the performance. Shortly thereafter, Wynette who is sporting a white skirt suit set joins in with the legend. The pair sang seamlessly with their voices complementing each other beautifully. The crowd goes insane when Wynette joins in the chorus, wowing the crowd with her impressive vocal range.
During the bridge, Haggard takes over with a guitar solo thoroughly exciting the crowd.
As the duet comes to a close, Wynette yells “My hero!” before leaning in to kiss Merle goodbye. “We love you too, Tammy,” says Merle as she exits the stage to the crowd’s applause.
“I Started Loving You Again” was written by Merle Haggard and Bonnie Owens and it was originally released off his sixth studio album The Legend of Bonnie & Clyde in 1968. The song has since been covered many times by artists such as Al Martino, Charlie McCoy, and Kenny Rogers.
