Corporal Russ Moseley had to say goodbye to his partner and best friend recently. That partner was Sergeant Canvas, a black lab, who served beside him in Afghanistan in 2010 as a detection dog. When Moseley lost his leg to a bomb, which Canvas attempted to save him from, she became his service dog here in the states.
Canvas was given a heroes goodbye, with Patriot Guard Riders escorting her on her final ride to the vet, where she would be put to sleep.
“She went from being very chipper, very happy and playful to just being down all the time…One night we went to sleep and when we woke up she couldn’t lift her rear end.” -Corporal Moseley
The lack of ability to move her rear end was due to a severe spinal chord condition. A hero who even at the end was trying to stay close to her owner and partner, she was sent off by not only friends and family, but strangers who saluted and respected her and the Moseley family during their heartwrenching loss.
