On March 15, 2006, Hank Williams‘ granddaughters, Hilary and her sister Holly, were driving from Nashville to Mer Rouge, Louisiana, to attend a family member’s funeral. In the blink of an eye, the two lost control of their SUV, flipped four times and ended up upside down in a field

Hilary immediately lost consciousness and all the two could do was wait for help to respond. The tragic car accident almost took both of their lives, although Hilary’s injuries were much more serious than her sisters. After 30 long minutes, the ambulance finally arrived and what happened next was a miracle

In the interview below, Hilary describes her surreal experience, saying:

My spirit came out and I just felt so peaceful, and I remember an angel came to take my hand and the angel was faceless. I remember being kind of torn, kind of wanting to stay and not wanting to leave my family but then once I got to Heaven, there was so much joy and you could just feel God and the music was amazing and you heard all these angels. I saw Merle Kilgore, my dad’s manager and best friend, and Johnny and June, … and then I saw my grandparents, Hank Williams and Audrey, and they were young and ageless and just gave me a big hug.

After seeing all of her loved ones who had passed, her grandparents told her “it’s not your time” and Hilary’s soul drifted back down to earth as she woke up.

After 23 surgeries, many years and lots of patience, Hilary’s life was finally headed back in the right direction. She decided to share her story with the world through music, and wrote the emotional song “Sign Of Life”.

Five months after the accident, Hilary said (in the video below), “When I was in the hospital, I was complaining to the doctor, ‘I’m in so much pain’, and he said well pain is a sign of life.” His words inspired her to write, “Sign of Life”, as she wanted to share her miracle, her experience in Heaven, and her return to the “family tradition” of music making.

We’re sure her grandfather is smiling down upon her, not only for her talent, but for her strength and for being an inspiration to the world.
