Lisa Robertson has decided to speak out on her infidelity, betrayal, agony, and redemption. She did so as her husband, Alan Robertson, the less-famous and beardless Robertson brother, sat next to her in support.
The married couple sat down for an interview with talk radio host Dianne Linderman and right off the bat, Lisa said, “We had a lot of struggles throughout or marriage.”
“When I was younger, I was molested by an uncle. So I really feel like that set me on a dishonesty course of who I was and what I was about. So, that lasted for 33 years.”
When Linderman thanks her for sharing her tough story with her, Alan says, “It’s the core of our story,” reassuring her not to feel bad about asking about it.
“I had not really had, other than sexual abuse, I had not had an experience with a guy until (Alan). So I truly lost my virginity at 15 with him. And whenever he left, and I really don’t ever want to blame him for anything, whenever he left it was a rejection. And I took that rejection to be that I was not good enough. So for the next two years I did as much as I could to prove to myself that I was good enough. And it didn’t matter what that included. That included sleeping with as many people as I could, drunk, it didn’t matter. And that lasted until he came back.”
The two dated in high school, but ended things when Alan began drinking heavily and doing drugs. A year later, they reconnected, both having grown a lot.
Lisa said, “[Alan] really did save me in the way that he rescued me out of that thinking.“
Even then, she says Satan had a hold on her. In 1999, Alan found out that she had a 14-month-long affair with an old boyfriend.
“We went through counseling, then I did a step study with a recovery group, through friends, bible studies, I really came to know who Christ was and then I was able to give him all of that. At first I was not able to do that.”
She attributes God to rescuing them. “He was the one who pulled us out of the pig’s pen and set us on new ground and said ‘This is what I have in store for you.’“
Alan, who is a preacher, and Lisa wanted to share their story because they wanted people to know they struggle just like everybody else. “We had a miscarriage, we had a baby that was born at 29 weeks, our two kids are only less than two years apart. We went through a period where we really had no money, and at one point we were on food stamps. We really have been through a lot of the same things all the people around the world have been through.”
It’s hard to watch this interview without getting a little misty-eyed. We are happy Alan and Lisa could work through their marriage and form an even stronger bond, as we see on Duck Dynasty occasionally.
