Classic Country Meets Modern Country: Willie Nelson Brings Us An Unexpected Duet

Willie Nelson personifies classic country. When you think about Nelson, modern country music is the last thing that comes to mind.

Well, surprisingly enough, Nelson joined forces with “Biscuits” singer, Kacey Musgraves, for one duet that y’all would have never expected. Nelson is a big supporter of Musgraves and took her on tour with him in 2014, so it should come as no surprise that the two decided to record a duet and make it a hidden track on her album, Pageant Material.

Are You Sure?” was actually both written and recorded by Nelson for his 1965 album, Country Willie – His Own SongsWe love to see modern takes on traditional songs, but when it comes to Nelson and Musgraves’ version, they keep it classic.

The idea for the duet came one day while they were both on tour. Musgraves was curious as to why Nelson never performed that particular song live anymore. In a Radio.com interview, Musgraves says, “He couldn’t believe I knew it,” she says about “Are You Sure?“. “I just really loved it. It’s very, very honest and very country. It’s a neat perspective.

Their collaboration is a must-see.I hope the live spirit we wanted to capture came across,” Kacey says. After listening, it’s obvious that dream came true. The melancholy tune gives off a lazy, yet heartbreaking feeling that definitely gives off the country spirit.

So what do you think of classic country meeting modern? Is it what you expected?

ARE YOU SURE? LYRICS

Oh, look around you
Look down the bar from you
The lonely faces that you see
Are you sure that this is where you want to be

These are your friends
But are they real friends
Do they love you the same as me
Are you sure that this is where you want to be

You seem in such a hurry to live this kind of life
You’ve caused so many tears and misery

Look around you, take a good look
And tell me what you see
Are you sure that this is where you want to be

Don’t let my tears persuade you, I had hoped I wouldn’t cry
But lately, teardrops seem a part of me

Oh, look around you, take a good look
At all the lonely used-to-be’s
Are you sure that this is where you want to be
