In the second season finale of “The Johnny Cash Show”, Johnny brought his mother onstage to accompany him, singing the first song he ever sang in public.

Johnny Cash was only 12 when he first performed the touching ballad, and then asked his mother (years later) to perform this meaningful song on his show.

The resulting scene is powerful, as Johnny beautifully introduces his talented mother, and leads her to the piano to play while he sings.

Johnny Cash had this to say about his mother, in an interview for Academy Of Achievement:

When [my brother] died, my best friend was still my mother, and she always encouraged me to sing. As a matter of fact, we were very poor and she took in washing from the school teachers, washed their clothes to make money to give me singing lessons, voice lessons. After about three lessons the voice teacher said, ‘Don’t take voice lessons. Do it your way.

Johnny Cash was very close to his mother, and she always encouraged him to follow his dreams.

This performance between the two of them shows just how close they really were, as his mother seems incredibly proud of her legendary son. Check out the rare performance below.
