If you know country, then you know this song.
The Trace Adkins classic, "You're Gonna Miss This" resonates with listeners from every generation. Whether you are a newlywed, a parent, or grandparent, chances are the lyrics written for this country ballad can be applied to whatever you are going through in life.
"You're Gonna Miss This" was written by Ashley Gorley and Lee Thomas Miller. Both are accomplished songwriters in the industry who have separately co-written numerous hit songs, including, George Strait's "If the Whole World Was a Honky Tonk", and Garth Brooks' "People Loving People". But when these two talented writers got together, the result was a beautifully meaningful country chart-topper.
"You're Gonna Miss This" was released on Adkins' album American Man: Greatest Hits Volume II, and peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart. It was also a major crossover success, and peaked at the 12th spot on the Billboard Hot 100. To this day, you frequently hear Adkins' touching song played during graduation season, as high school graduates and their parents reflect on the past and look toward the future.
It is said the idea for the song came from a personal experience Gorley had with his own children. The song follows a daughter as she goes from being in school, to getting married, to having children of her own. During each stage of her life, the daughter expresses her desire to get past it, but her mother and father keep telling her, "you're gonna miss this/you're gonna want this back/you're gonna wish these days hadn't gone by so fast."
As a father himself, it's no surprise that Adkins was able to connect to the song so easily, and it is his heartfelt delivery of the lyrics that give it extra emotional impact.
The music video accompanies the story told in the song, as it features scenes with a young woman moving through the different stages of her life. Adkins appears throughout the video as well, and can often be seen driving his pickup around town, which is actually his hometown of Sarepta, Louisiana.
After all of these years, "You're Gonna Miss This" has stood the test of time, and remains one of Adkins' most beloved tracks. You can watch the song's touching music video in the clip below.
