While country music legend Alan Jackson and his loving wife Denise have been married for almost 40 years, the two have continued to openly express their unbreakable bond and unwavering love for one another.

“We learned that if a relationship’s going to be good, you have to make it a priority,” Denise told PEOPLE.

Jackson’s wife has been the legend’s biggest support system long before his rise to fame – they were high school sweethearts. Denise previously worked for an airline and connected him with Glen Campbell, who helped jumpstart his career.

To honor the incredibly strong woman by his side, Jackson assisted in his wife’s writing endeavors by recording a song called “That’s The Way” to accompany one of her books. According to a press release, Jackson also serenaded his bride upon their wedding day with “That’s The Way,” expressing his love for her in one of the only ways he knew how.

The song has since become a wedding-must because of its exceptional sound and heartwarming lyrics.
