When it comes to awards shows, there is a limited amount of time to cover all of the awards that need to be presented. As a result, some awards have to be distributed off-air or at another time.
The ACM Awards are no different, and there are some special awards and categories that the organization doesn’t have the time to recognize properly during its main ceremony. That’s how the ACM Honors came to be, so that special ACM honorees and winners could be recognized in an extraordinary way.
The 2017 ACM Honors ceremony took place on August 23 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Some of the honorees included Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, and George Strait.
The honorees were celebrated with a series of tribute performances from other artists. When it came time for Strait to be presented with the Cliffie Stone Icon Award, Chris Stapleton stepped up to the plate to honor him with one of his biggest hits.
That hit was Strait’s 1993 single “When Did You Stop Loving Me.” The song was released as the final single off of the highly successful soundtrack from the Pure Country movie, which is Strait’s best-selling album of all time. Following its release, “When Did You Stop Loving Me” reached the sixth spot on both the U.S. and Canadian country charts.
Stapleton delivered an extraordinary performance of the song during the ACM Honors ceremony. His performance was a definite highlight of the night, as he perfectly captured the song’s mournful nature in his voice.
Tune in below to treat your ears to the sound of Stapleton singing “When Did You Stop Loving Me.” This clip is only a snippet of his performance, so it’s sure to leave you begging for more!
We’re bet Strait was pleased with hearing Stapleton sing his hit song so well. Congratulations to him on receiving the Cliffie Stone Icon Award!
