Chris Stapleton Pays Tribute To Gregg Allman With 2015 Live Performance Of ‘Whipping Post’

The Allman Brothers Band’s ability to incorporate elements of jazz, blues, and country into their southern rock music is something no one has ever, or will be able to recreate. They are truly one of a kind.

Chris Stapleton, Little Big Town and blues musician Taj Mahal joined forces to pay tribute to Gregg Allman’s legacy for an installment of the online concert series Skyville Live. They all performed different Allman Brothers songs, and some even included Gregg himself.

Gregg admitted in an interview with Rolling Stone that he didn’t have a clue that his band The Allman Brothers band, would have the impact they now do.

“I had no idea,” he said. “When you’re in the process of learning, you don’t even think about somebody else picking up on you.”

Stapleton honored Gregg by singing an amazing version of “Whipping Post.” His gritty vocals and soulful delivery were made for this song.

“Whipping Post” was written by Gregg for The Allman Brothers Band’s 1969 self-titled debut album. The studio version is only five minutes long, but when they play it live, it can be much longer.

Their live album, At Fillmore East, featured a 22-minute version of the song and earned it a spot on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list, and Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

Stapleton pulled out all the stops and absolutely killed his rendition of “Whipping Post.” Gregg, along with the entire audience, gave him a well-deserved standing ovation.
