When it was announced that Chris Stapleton would be opening for Guns N’ Roses at their Nashville tour stop, no one was quite sure how he would be received. Although Stapleton is one of the biggest names in Nashville right now, many wondered how the rock and roll crowd would view the soulful country star.
If Stapleton was the least bit worried about how the Guns N’ Roses fans would receive him, those worries were quickly dashed once he started performing in Nissan Stadium on July 9.
The crowd reacted with overwhelming positivity to Stapleton’s 45-minute set, which included powerhouse tracks such as “Outlaw State of Mind” and “Tennessee Whiskey.” Perhaps the most powerful moment of the night came when Stapleton performed his riveting song, “Fire Away.” As he sang the emotional words, the sun set behind him, creating a mesmerizing scene.
Showing how much they enjoyed Stapleton’s music, the crowd remained on their feet throughout the duration of his performance. Stapleton fed off of the positive energy coming from the crowd, which led to him delivering one of the best performances of his career.
Stapleton’s wife, Morgane, was by his side as always, and she also got her chance to shine in front of Guns N’ Roses’ fans. Stepping aside, Stapleton let his talented wife take center stage to sing her rendition of “You Are My Sunshine.” Although a folk song is the last thing you’d expect to hear at a rock concert, the crowd was just as invested in Morgane’s performance as her husband’s.
For Stapleton, opening for Guns N’ Roses was a dream come true. Stapleton told the crowd he never believed such a thing would be possible, saying, “When I was a kid, if you’d have told me I’d be up here playing before Guns N’ Roses, I’d have called you a liar.”
But Stapleton did open for Guns N’ Roses, and he rocked it! You can watch Stapleton perform his album’s title track, “Traveller,” during his opening for Guns N’ Roses in the clip below.
