Two Big Stars Take On One Hit Song
Two of country music’s biggest stars in the 1970s were none other than Conway Twitty and Charley Pride. In 1971, Pride released what went on to become one of his trademark songs, “Kiss an Angel Good Morning.”
Just a year later, Twitty took up the song himself, and released his own rendition on his album I Can’t See Me Without You.
When Pride released the song it quickly became his eighth number one hit on the country chart. It also was his first single to cross over to the pop chart, where it peaked at the 21st spot. In total, the song spent four months on the pop chart, which is longer than any of Pride’s other hits.
Written by Ben Peters, “Kiss an Angel Good Morning” is a light-hearted love story. When the narrator’s friends ask him why he’s so happy all the time, he responds that it’s because he gets to “kiss an angel good morning.”
Bet You’ve Never Heard Conway Sing It
Twitty never released his version of the song as a single, which is why few people know that he recorded it. Besides Twitty, only a handful of artists have covered “Kiss an Angel Good Morning.” Next to Pride’s original version, Twitty’s is our favorite.
Since “Kiss an Angel Good Morning” is such a classic country song, Twitty’s classic country voice was the perfect fit for it. He managed to make the song his own while he maintained its original character and charm.
Partway through the song, Twitty made his only major change when he switched up a few words to pay tribute to Pride , as he sang, “the answer’s in that song Charley always sings.”
