One thing’s for certain, musical talent runs through the Twitty family’s veins. Conway Twitty was one of the most iconic country stars of all time, with countless hit albums and singles to his name. His untimely passing at the age of 59 in 1993 left the genre without one of its shining stars.
But Conway’s legacy continues to live on in the hearts and the voices of his family. His son, Michael, often sings his father’s songs as well as his own. Michael’s son, and Conway’s grandson, Tre, has also helped carry on Conway’s legacy.
During a performance in 2014, Tre decided to cover another classic country legend. Like Conway, Waylon Jennings was a country star we lost far too soon. After a successful career and one of the pioneers of the outlaw country subgenre, Waylon passed away at the age of 64 in 2003.
One of Waylon’s most iconic hits pays tribute to another country great, Hank Williams. Called “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way” the song acknowledges Hank’s influence on country music while also questioning its current state. The song became a number one hit following its release, and is still a favorite among country fans.
Tre gave the song some Twitty flair when he covered it, and although he doesn’t sound exactly like his grandfather, you can hear hints of Conway in his voice. He delivered a performance that was country to the core, and the crowd rewarded him with a warm round of applause afterwards.
No matter what he sings, Tre honors his grandfather’s immense legacy in each and every performance. We feel like both Conway and Waylon would be proud of his cover of “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way.” You can see it for yourself in the video below.
