Country singers are no strangers to covering Lynyrd Skynyrd songs. Since country and Southern rock are closely linked, artists from the two genres often pay homage to one another.
When it comes to Southern rock legends, Skynyrd is the cream of the crop. That’s why the band gets so many shout-outs in country songs, from Trace Adkins‘ “Ladies Love Country Boys” to Gretchen Wilson‘s “Redneck Woman.”
Most of the time, country stars opt to cover Skynyrd’s most popular songs: “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Free Bird,” or “Simple Man.” But Eric Church decided to stray from the beaten path, and stunned concertgoers with his rendition of another big Skynyrd hit titled “What’s Your Name.”
“What’s Your Name” was released in 1977 as the opening track on the band’s album Street Survivors. The song was a chart smash, and climbed all the way to the 13th spot on Billboard Hot 100.
The song’s success can be attributed to the fact that it’s simply fun to listen to. Decades after its release, it still remains one of the most well-known songs in Skynyrd’s arsenal of hits.
You could say that “What’s Your Name” has a rowdy vibe, which is why it was the perfect choice for Church. Known for being a bit of a rebel, Church tackled the song with unbridled enthusiasm.
The coolest part about Church’s cover is the fact that you could hear the crowd singing along with him. We bet the energy level in that room was off the charts!
