Dolly Parton Shows Her Vulnerable Side In Heavenly New Recording
on Mar 10, 2017
Released in 2007 from her album of the same name, folk artist Brandi Carlile likely never expected the impact that “The Story” would have on the world. The song’s popularity exploded after it was featured on the show Grey’s Anatomy, leading it to the 35th spot on the Billboard Adult Pop Songs chart.
A few artists have covered “The Story” in the decade since its release. Singer and actress Sara Ramirez’s version is one of the most notable. As an actress on Grey’s Anatomy, Ramirez performed “The Story” as her character on the show.
The country music community has also tried its hand at “The Story” before. LeAnn Rimes recorded a version of the tune for her album Remnants, and released it in the UK as a single.
Now, Dolly Parton has joined the list of artists that have put their spin on “The Story,” and for a special reason.
To celebrate the release of “The Story” and its accompanying album, Carlile is releasing an album titled Cover Stories: Brandi Carlile Celebrates 10 Years of The Story – An Album to Benefit War Child. The album features covers of all of the original songs on The Story, and Parton was given the honor of singing its title track.
Parton’s version of the song features stunning instrumental work, as her voice is surrounded by guitar and piano sounds. But Parton’s voice is the most beautiful instrument in the entire mix.
The way that Parton plays with her volume and tone throughout the song allows her to tell its story through her voice. You may think that the soft way that she handles the verses is powerful, but just wait until you hear her on the chorus. That’s when she allows her voice to propel forward with an explosion of sound that will leave you covered with goosebumps.
“Breathtaking” is the one word we would use to sum up Parton’s performance on this track. Tune in below to give it a listen, then let us know what you think when you’re done.
This is Parton at her absolute best…
