During the February 17, 1971 debut of his self-written song “Man In Black,” music legend Johnny Cash used his moment of introduction to reveal the somber reasoning behind the fiery song that had fans swarming.

The musician gave an incredibly compelling introduction to the then-brand-new tune, revealing that his recent interactions with fans who had insightful questions prompted Cash to draft the tune and inspire those that had done the same for him.

Cash admitted, “I just finished writing the song, the fourth or fifth rewrite, this morning…this song is a very personal thing, I suppose you might say, but it’s the way I feel about a lot of things.”

Introducing “The Man In Black,” the singer began to strum his guitar as he chillingly sang, “Well, you wonder why I always dress in black, / Why you never see bright colors on my back, / And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone. / Well, there’s a reason for the things that I have on.”

His audience was mesmerized, absorbing each powerful lyric as it addressed the heartbreaking truths of society. As Cash reached the song’s chorus, his audience erupted in applause and cheers of approval, identifying with the singer’s message of unfairness and negligence.

Needless to say, his standing ovation was much deserved. Be sure to experience this sensational first performance and tell us what you think.
