It was just before the next presidential race was set to begin and Hillary was speaking with 60 Minutes for a very candid and face-to-face interview alongside her husband, Bill Clinton, who had announced his bid for presidency.
On January 26th, 1992, Hillary Clinton was speaking about how the marriage with Fmr. President Bill Clinton was good and wholesome in its own way. With incredible conviction, she stated how much she loved and respected her husbandโฆbut she also stated something that would spark a fairly large controversy.
After the interviewer suggested that the Clintonโs had come to an โarrangementโ or โunderstandingโ to ensure the continued success of their marriage, Hillary got a tad defensive.
โYou know, Iโm not sitting here โ some little woman โstanding by my manโ like Tammy Wynette.โ
Following those words, there was an enormous public backlash against Hillary, including Tammy Wynette herself demanding the would-be First Woman to apologize to her.
As it turned out, Wynette got that apology she requested, and Hillary also later explained the situation in her autobiography, Living History.
โThe fallout from my reference to Tammy Wynette was instant and brutal,โ Hillary writes. โI meant to refer to Tammy Wynetteโs famous song, โStand By Your Manโ, not to her as a person. I regretted the way I had come across.โ
