Last year the world was introduced to ukulele strumming 12-year-old, Grace VanderWaal, when her audition on America’s Got Talent went viral. As rightly predicted by Howie Mandel when he gifted her with his golden buzzer, the talented young singer went on to not only to earn the season win, but has since become a household name.

With almost a year having come and gone since her massive AGT win, VanderWaal has done a lot of growing up, noticeably in her latest video, “Moonlight.” While her new song possesses an upbeat melody easy to dance to, VanderWaal wrote the song out of a place of darkness she experienced over the past year.

“The story is someone going through depression and seeing the way they’re changing and that fake altered personality,” she shared in an Instagram video, thanking her fans for their supportive response. “A lot of people go through depression and if you know someone please talk to them and try and reach out.”

While the young singer didn’t delve too deep into what exactly happened in her life to inspire the melancholy lyrics, but she vaguely shared that something happened to her and she wrote the song as a method of healing.
