Long before fans knew anything regarding Trace Adkins' new album Something's Going On, they knew the song "Jesus and Jones." The song made its debut in January 2016 as the first single off of Adkins' then-unnamed album, and was Adkins' first single released in three years.
Written by Casey Beathard, Tyler Farr, and Jim McCormick, "Jesus and Jones" served as the introduction to the material to come on Something's Going On. Like other tracks on the album, "Jesus and Jones" takes on a mature, reflective approach as Adkins looks back on his life and the decisions he has made.
The song places Adkins in a mental war with two sides of himself, the good side that leans toward Jesus, and the rebellious side that is more like George Jones. It's a conflict that fans were obviously able to relate to, because they sent the song all the way to the 41st spot on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.
Adkins opened up about his special connection to "Jesus and Jones" during his Story Behind the Song series on his YouTube channel. It turns out that the song is more personal than you would think, since Adkins and Jones were actually friends in real life.
"It's just so autobiographical," Adkins said. "[It] spoke to me, and it's my homage to George Jones. George was a friend of mine, and I sure miss the times I got to spend with him. It's just...the song means a lot to me."
We can tell just how much the song meant to Adkins by listening to him talk in the clip. It meant so much that he decided to make it the first thing that fans would hear off of his new album Something's Going On.
