George Jones has helped inspire countless artists to follow in his legendary footsteps, one such artist being Trace Adkins. As Adkins climbed the ladder to fame and success, Jones and his music inspired him all the way.

Eventually, Adkins and Jones became close friends. Before Jones passed away in 2012, the two shared some fun times and great memories together. To honor his idol, Adkins took to the stage at the George Jones and Friends 50th Anniversary Tribute Concert in 2007 to perform one of his most well-known songs, “Same Ole Me.”

“Same Ole Me” was recorded by Jones and The Oak Ridge Boys and was released in 1982. The song was a Top 10 hit in the U.S. and a number one hit in Canada, and earned a spot in history as one of Jones’ most recognizable songs.

The song is country to the core, with the narrator proclaiming that even after the passage of time he is still the same person he was years before. He also states that even though he’s growing older, he still loves his lady with everything he has.

Adkins’ performance of “Same Ole Me” was pure country, and his deep baritone voice fit the song like a glove. His admiration of Jones is clear through this performance, and we’re sure he made him proud with it. Watch him sing “Same Ole Me” below.

In January 2016, Adkins gave a nod to his friend in a new single, titled “Jesus and Jones.” Later in the year, he released another new single, called “Lit,” which fans are loving just as much as its predecessor.
