Johnny Cash Collaborates With Waylon Jennings In Outstanding Throwback Farm Aid Performance

Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings were the definition of what outlaw country is all about. Individually, the two helped shape the movement to make it one of the most popular country music subgenres. Together, they were unstoppable.

In 1985, Cash and Jennings teamed up with Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson to form the country music supergroup, The Highwaymen. The group didn’t have a real name at first, and were credited by their last names on their debut album.

That album was titled after one of its tracks, called “Highwayman,” which hit number one on the charts. The song’s success stuck with the group, and they officially became The Highwaymen.

Cash and Jennings also collaborated as a duo the same year they formed The Highwaymen.

During Willie Nelson’s Farm Aid benefit concert, Cash and Jennings both took to the stage as Cash started to perform one of his biggest hits, “Folsom Prison Blues.”

With Jennings by his side, Cash crooned into the microphone in his signature style. While Jennings didn’t sing at all during the performance, he still had an important role. He was the one in charge of playing the twangy guitar part, which is just as recognizable as the song itself.

Cash and Jennings fed off of each other’s energy, resulting in an electrifying performance. It was just as rowdy as you’d expect from two outlaws like them!
