Keith Urban has lots to celebrate, with a successful career in country music, a former spot as a judge on American Idol, and of course, his marriage to actress Nicole Kidman, with whom he shares two beautiful daughters, Sunday and Faith.

Even though Urban’s life has had its dark moments when it comes to his battle with addiction, he in a sense celebrates those moments as well. Or rather, he celebrates how he was able to push through them thanks to his beautiful wife.

During a reception for his Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit, Urban told The Boot and other reporters about his past struggles and how Kidman helped save him.

A Dark History

Early in his career and before he met Kidman, Urban checked into a treatment center for his addiction in 1998 and again in 2003. But Urban says his second visit to the treatment center, “didn’t take either. It wasn’t until he met Kidman that Urban finally found his way out of addiction:

“[She’s] the one I’ve been looking for and the one I’ve been preparing for, or life has been preparing me for, anyway. We got married, and I hadn’t taken care of my problems, and so my demons just came and kicked my a– and her a– and blew our world up. But this woman rallied the troops…”

With Kidman’s help, Urban entered rehab mere months after their wedding in 2006:

In so many ways, it was the most powerful act of love in reaching into the fire and pulling me out,” Urban said, “because she believed in me, and she saw something in me in such a way that she risked everything, everything, to trust me and pull me out of the fire and let me then do the right thing and move into the light.

Love Saved Him

Thanks to Kidman, Urban no longer struggles with addiction, and he is forever grateful to her for saving him from himself:

There’s a great Hemingway quote that says, ‘The world breaks everyone, and afterwards, some are strong at the broken place’ and I feel that that is what my wife brought to me,” Urban said. “I’m strong in the broken places because she saw something in me, and I love you for that.

While Urban and Kidman were engaged, Urban helped co-write the song “Once in a Lifetime,” about them starting their relationship and how she shouldn’t be afraid to love him. You can watch Urban perform the song in the video below.

We wish Urban and Kidman many more years of happiness together!
